COVID-19 RELIEF A GRAND SUCCESS – THANK YOU MONTREAL!
On Tuesday, October 26, the Spice Island Cultural Day Association of Quebec (SICDAQ) in collaboration with the Grenada Nationals Association of Montreal (GNAM) shipped well needed medical and other supplies to Grenada to assist with the COVID-19 Relief. Special thanks to members of the community who contributed towards this humanitarian effort for our homeland.
With this initiative from Mr. Derrick James, Director of the Diaspora Affairs-Grenada, Grenadians and friends of Grenada living in Montreal were able to contribute significantly to this venture. Fifteen Individual Care Packages purchased through Scotts Medical Supply in Miami have arrived on Island and distributed by the Ministry of Health to individuals who test positive for COVID-19. Our first donation of 3,000 masks has already been distributed in Grenada and Carriacou by the Diaspora Affairs Office.
On the weekend of October 24-25, members of SICDAQ and GNAM gathered to pack boxes and barrels for shipment. Currently 6 barrels, 16 boxes and 1 tub are on-route to Grenada through Karib Shipping. It is anticipated to arrive in the next four weeks. The value of these items is in excess of $20,000 EC. These items which contain mainly PPEs are earmarked for The General Hospital, various institutions, churches and various Parishes throughout the Island.
Through the efforts of GNAM, a BMO account has been opened:
(A/c Name: GRE Covid 19 – Account No.: 0212 1990 230) E-transfer info: firstname.lastname@example.org. Donations can still be sent through this account, as this is an on-going effort. A COVID-19 Relief Efforts Bin is also placed at Greenz Restaurant, 395 St. Jacques, Lachine for collection of items.
It is great to know the rate of hospitalization and death has been on the decline from its heights in September. However, while there is a decrease in cases and daily deaths there is still a need for an uptake in vaccination as expressed by the Ministry of Health. At the moment, our focus in the diaspora is preparation for the anticipated second wave of this virus. As such, we are encouraged to continue our efforts.
